Hunting Idle with A/C on

I am sure this has been discussed many times before...but I am posting this for a fellow 3rd gen owner (considering mine isn't even running) and he is a moron and doesn't' have an account on the list or forum. :-)

Anyway, the problem that he is having is with his idle. The problem is only happening when he turns the A/C on. And I think it is gradually worse the hotter the car is and the issue still happens no matter if he is in gear or neutral. What happens is right when he turns the A/C on the car idle starts to hunt....It will get as bad as lowering to 350 rpm and jump all the way to around 1100 rpm. He said if he lets it stay that way for around 45 sec. the car will eventually stall. We just changed the spark plugs thinking that could be an issue but the problem still exists. Does anyone have any ideas on what the problem could be. His mods are full exhaust, intake, and PFC.

Thanks in advance.

Jon

mine does the same thing if I use a higher fan setting or if the electrical load gets too heavy. Have him check out the bypass air control valve on the throttle body. The shop manual suggests a test you can do with a standard multimeter. You also might just have him try to clean the butterfly valves with carb cleaner and see if that improves the situation. If his idle is low to begin with (below 700) without load, he could try to raise it slightly as well.

Hey Jon,
Who's car is doing this? After I reassambled mine... it's doing it to. I think it's actually caused by the ISC (Idle speed controler) on the UIM. That is what controls the idle when there is an electrical load on the system. *shrug*

Hows your car going man?! Gimmi a call!

It is Ryan's car that is doing this. He has been complaining to me about it for awhile and wanted me to post something for him...I sent an email to the list as well and got a reply from someone saying it was something with a PFC setting...not sure on that. He directed me to a site.

I gave up on my car and had it towed in this weekend. I am getting it diagnosed and compression checked. I have already told myself that I am going to be happy and pissed off no matter what they tell me. If they tell me I need a new engine I am going to be pissed off but happy that I took it in. If they tell me it wasn't a big deal then I am going to be happy that I didn't need a new engine buy pissed that I couldn't figure it out for myself..

Oh well. I should find out some info early this next week. I will keep you updated...

Who did you tow it in to? You should have had the overflow checked for exhaust gases... or did you ever get it started after you flooded it?

Man... should have gave me a call man... I faught w/ mine for several days and I never thought it would start (after flooding it) and I got it going

I'm sorry man... we just droped the tranny on mine (AGAIN) and I realigned the clutch and re torqued the pressure plate and replaced the line between the clutch master and slave cylinder. Were going to put it back together today and hopefully we'll be able to put it in gear *shrug*

good luck man... but if you sent it to Mike Ploof ask for ALOT and I mean ALOT of deatils if he says you need a new motor. Ask for EXACTLY why he thinks you do and EXACTLY why he thinks that.... don't go off any hunches... (in fact... I don't care who says that.... ask them too!) You have a right to that info!
