there should be alittle shaft play, like microscopical (1mm) due to no oilpressure when the engine is off, due to no oilpressure. Get a person who knows turbos to feel it. Its a feel-kind-of-thing this...
Its kinda like asking "how heavy is a sack of potatoes"...
turbo fanblades rarely snap. Mainly its the bearings or the seals that go first and the turboes start to smoke like a coalfired steamboat, and drinks alot of oil.

Shaft play is required or else the shaft couldn't turn. But only a little bit. I'm not aware of a spec that covers how much play is normal. As the bearings wear there is more play. It's been said that any play in the axial direction is a sign of heavy wear.
Fortunately, the first symptom of worn bearings is blowing smoke out your exhaust on acceleration. If the leak is on the compressor side of the seal, you'll also find a lot of oil inside your intake piping. Unless you've been ignoring smoke clouds for a long time, your turbos not going to shred or break into pieces.
