Question How to test engine RPM?

My tach is screwy and has been since I bought it about a month ago. I want to make sure my car is idling correctly since it might be a bit before I get the tach fixed. Does anyone know how to test the engine rpm on a fd? Is it any different then piston cars? They have rpm testers at auto parts stores, but they are all set up for 4, 6, and 8 cylinder cars. Thanks.

set it up as a 4banger and it will work fine
