Question How to tell if my A/C is R12 or R134?

I did some searched, but most of the info I found was about how to do the conversion, and not how to tell which you have now.

My A/C recently stopped blowing cold (still blows), so I want to try recharging it, but I don't know if the previous owner converted it or not. I know there is something different about the fittings, but what do I specifically look for to tell which it is currently running?

Thanks

The R12 fittings are screw-on, while the R134 are quick disconnect

The fittings he's referring to are the service ports. They're located on the A/C lines on the passenger side...near the ABS module.

If it hasn't been converted, I would suggest you stay R-12 since you have a black car in FL....you need all the performance you can get, and R-134a won't give it to you. 14oz cans of R-12 are going for about $20 on eBay. You only need two.

I think the two R-134 ports mentioned above should be capped blue and red. Not certain, but they might be (probably) be located on the passenger side...near the inner fender below the ABS unit. That's where they put mine when I had it converted. Blows surprisingly cold...even in the hot humid midwest summers.

R-134a conversions *typically* have red and blue caps, but not always...

well it has a quick disconnect fitting on a thicker line with blue cap, and a red cap on the thinner (assuming high pressure) line. the fitting on that one is thicker.

that sucks, i was hoping for r12. oh well.
thanks for the help.

charged it up with a can of artic cool, seems to have taken the whole can, and pressure seemed ok, but still blows warm. engaging the a/c button seems to do something (revs drop a bit when turned on), so i think the thing is engaging, but not sure. guess its time to goto an a/c guy. ugggh. and its like 10000 degrees out this week too. nice! lol
