how to take off downpipe and intake pipe that connects to it?

how to take off downpipe and intake pipe that connects to it?
there are a couple of bolts that are impossible to reach (or so it seems)
Do you have to take off everything that is above the bottom of the intake pipe and work your way down to it? I haven't looked at the car recently but I'm thinking that it was a heat shield that was in the way of the bolt.
