How should I go about getting a new (well not new) engine?
I am planning on building a new engine this spring/summer. I don't want my car to be down for a long time during a rebuild because it is my daily driver, so if I can just switch everything over one week that would be best.
So since I want an "extra" engine, what should I do. Buy a reman and just pay the core charge, buy a used motor and a rebuild kit, ???????. I am planning on having it medium to large street ported when I have it and possibly some 2mm ceramic seal (so damn expensive though)
Im just looking for options of how to go about doing this.
Thanks in advance.

Wouldnt it be cheaper to get some beater for a few bucks during the time you have your car down ? It can be way cheaper then paying for the core charge.
But if you want an extra engine on the side when your pops, then yes, I guess getting a new reman and having it ported is the best solution.

Guys, I don't think he wants a beater...If so I think he may have titled the thread "What beater to buy when the FD breaks?"
To minimize downtime he plans on having a fresh motor ready for install. It can be done in a matter of hours.. No need to drive a piece of **** when you can drive the car you want.

I'd say reman, and have a go at porting it yourself.
Call Ray Crowe and see if he can hold off on the core charge for a month or two. Have him put a hold on your credit card for the amount of the core charge, just in case you don't send your old motor back (not that you wouldn't, but just for his sake), but not actually charge the card.
That should give you time to get the reman, port it, and put it in.

id buy all the nessary parts(seals, apexseals, etc) wait till you want to rebuild it, rebuild it in 2days, put it back in the next day. i think thats the cheapest way. buying a whole engine is kinda pushing it unless youve got a good amount of cash laying around.
but this would only work if you know how to rebuild the motor yourself, or had someone close by, ie. friend.

Thanks, that is what I was thinking. Either buy used or reman. The core charge for the reman is what has been getting me. Trying to get the charge on the core sounds like a good idea.
What are considered good prices and low core charges for a reman? I just put in for my mazdamotorsports support thing, can you get a reman through them? or only rebuild kits?
Thanks for all the help.
