How to replace fuel filter

I need to replace the fuel filter on my FD3s, how do you access it?

I lifted the car and the fuel filter appears to be on top of the diff.

There's no way I can even get my hands up there...:Wconfused

https://www.rx7club.com/3rd-generation-specific-1993-2002-16/fuel-filter-replacement-upgrade-pics-272305/

some of the pictures are missing but you'll get the idea.
Basically
1. relieve fuel line pressure
2. remove the old filter with the mounting bracket.
3. put new filter on bracket.
4. remount

yea its a bit of a pain but its doable.....

93RX7-EUROPA,

First off, welcome to the forum. Not to sound harsh, but I would wager that almost everything you want to do has already been covered before. If you use the search function in the 3rd Gen section, you will find tons of useable information.

Here is another link that was located in the 3rd Gen archives

i've never done this before, but i've read that the labor charges for changing out the fuel filter are ridiculous. it's only $25 at jiffy lube?

Thanks to all!
I will install it today, I will let you know how it goes.

is this wise? if they dont plug the fuel lines right away the fuel system will have to be repressurized...right?

This isn't a technically involved job. But I've seen how the work-release folks at JiffyLube can screw up a simple oil change. A mystery would be why anyone would give them a tougher job.

bumpidy bump for my question^^

thx

BillM 03-26-08 07:43 AM

when I did mine I just - ran the fuel tank down low, removed the fuel pump relay, ran the car til it died, did the change (some fuel leaked out), put the relay back in and cranked til it started (about 5 seconds).

You can just prime the fuel system by running the fuel pump for a few seconds before starting the car. No biggie. Otherwise it just cranks for a while before starting.

i was just wondering if i could replace the stock filter with that of another car, im sure it will require some fabbing. the thing is i there are no FD filters available here and i doubt any company delivers to pakistan, let alone charge a credit card registered here.

That shouldn't be a problem, just make sure it is made for a fuel injected car, the filters for carbureted systems won't work because they aren't made for high pressure.

You might as well relocate it to a more accessible spot too. :)

Is there a flow rating he would need to match?

Perhaps, maybe it would be smart to obtain a fuel filter from a car with a larger engine?

However, IIRC the fuel filter for miatas is about the same size as the FD's filter. And the miata sips gas compared the FD. It has been a while since I replaced the miata filter, so I could be mistaken.

samad 03-26-08 03:14 PM

hmmm i was thinking of the 2004 honda civic filter. it has a pretty straight forward design. easy to mount anywhere! but ill see if i can find one from a bigger engine car. a jeep maybe!

The hardest thing I have ever done in my life.

If you're as stubborn as I am and don't want to remove any other components, send me a message and I'll give you some insight.

im sorry i keep hearing this number thrown around for the price of the fuel filter. its more like $45 dollars unless you have some magical source for parts. it is $45ish from ray.

This has been discussed before, and I believe the person that started the discussion was using a Porsche filter. I don't know for sure, but I believe there are flow requirements. Either way, the rotary is already sensitive to lean conditions, so I would be very careful about which filter I used as a replacement.

Hey guys as I mentioned earlier I'm in the parts business and I have all the FD OEM fuel filters you want in stock for $19.90 each plus shipping.

catch-22 03-28-08 12:07 PM

i wouldn't let the jiffy lube in my town touch my car with a ten foot pole.

Why not just buy the correct FD filter? They are not expensive.

Sorry if my previous comment confused you, I have installed a fuel filter in a 2001 miata and I recall it being 'similar' in size and shape to the FD filter. I would not recommend using a miata filter on your FD unless you have no other choice and you have verified that the size of the filter and the inlet/outlet lines are comparable to the FD's.

I swear I remember reading somewhere that the Miatas have the same fuel filter but I checked the parts catalog and the first two gens have different outlets. The 2001 model looks similar to the FD's, but it does have a different P/N. I wouldn't be surprised if they were identical units though.

Fuel Filter Replacement...It's Done!!

I finally replaced the fuel filter, what a bear it was removing it!! I used a handi little hose pinch pliers to pinch the fuel hoses and they did not leak at all. The worst part was removing the existing hose clamps and removing the hoses from the old filter. The reverse prosses was a snap it took about 20 minutes to re-install the new filter. The removal took about 2 hours, scarred and cut hands and forearms, etc. But it's finally DONE!!

Was anyone ever successful with relocating the fuel filter?

Just to add to this one,

I used to own a 2001 BMW M5 V8 sedan. The fuel filter in these is a really nice 8 inch long (approx.) canister with the same sized barb ends as the FD filter. Its an extremely high quality BMW filter with more filter media surface area and the external canister is even polished looking alloy. They are German and made for severe service duty and yet cheaper than the FD stock filter.

I'm going to relocate my filter and use one of these beauties when I do.
