How to remove the solenoid rack?

Alright i'm doing the vacuum hose job and i wanna do it right so i wanna take the rack out. But no surprise no matter how much i tried to not round out the phillips head screws all are gone. I've tried using a small counter bit, didn't work, tried just drill it out, drill can't go past were the head stops. PLus i broke a tip of a solenoid and don't i have to take the rack off to get to that?

Thanks
~Luke

If you can, get some needle nose or a small pair of vice grips. Clamp it on the screw then try to turn. Once you get them out go to a hardware store and buy some of the same size bolts. That way if you ever need the solenoid rack off again just take a socket to it.

don't laugh, but if you've already rounded the screws out, you could try that new Craftsmen tool designed to pull out rounded out screws.

Good luck.

i feel your pain. taking them out is a pain in the ***. but a bit of advice. you don't have to take the whole rack out to get a solenoid out. you can actually take them out one by one if you are careful. first, cut any vaccuum lines off going to it. second, take a think screwdriver and put down on the tab on the bottom of the solenoid from the passenger side. be careful and don't use too much force because most likely it will be brittle from the years of heat abuse. pull the solenoid out simulataneously and it should slide out.

good luck.
