Well?

Espescially, if you don't have the cash to buy 99 Spec or enough cashola to do the switchover to single turbo.

If it was me, I'd buy that set of turbos that jesselau has up for sale right now.

Yepz..I'm a little short of that.

Which is why I'm asking..I don't think I'd go with the 99 Spec's anyways...more like a single turbo.

I'm in the basic mode of getting my 93 RX-7 back to it's factory condition right now...I don't want to start slapping on modifications, and end up having the turbos go out on me.

My current turbos have 98k on them. And I imagine half of that has been with a busted y-pipe coupling, so they've been working pretty damn hard to make up the difference.

Also...they're practically new..an hour worth of run time on them.

Anyone? I couldn't find a straight answer in search, i.e, "stock twins price", "stock twins cost", etc...etc...

Stock twins go for about 2.8k new
99's cost about the same
I would say that the turbos you are describing are worth 2k

I'd buy them for 1k as backups

I would take them back to Mazda for a refund then get some BNR rebuilds, stock rebuilds are only $750ish.

I'd rather have some $750 stock rebuilds and a pocket full of money (about $2000) than a set of new oem twins that cost around $2800. lol

Hmm..

I've read that not many people are satisfied with rebuilds though? As in alotta people are having problems with them...and that they don't last long?

Every thread I've read about turbo rebuilds, say to screw rebuilding them, and just go buy a single or 99 Spec?

It's just you. It is missing, not broken.

Many people have been happy with rebuilds.

That said, NEW turbos from Mazdamotorsports are $1984, 99+ are $2400.

I'd pay $1000 for those turbos.

Does the seller have any way to back up the claim that they only have an "hour's" worth of run time on them?
I would like to know when and where they were purchased originally, as well as why they want to part with them.

I would also pay to have an expert like Rob at Pineapple Racing inspect them and get his opinion (what's a half hour worth of shop time - maybe $50.00?) before plunking down even $1K (which I think is a fair price) for USED parts. You could offer to pay for shipping (insured of course) and packing to Pineapple. If you did not get a clean bill of health he would pay for shipping to get them back.

It's what you call win - win.

I'm not skeptical - they LOOK excellent - just practicing due diligence.

Thanks for the suggestion Ron...I appreciate it. But one of the better things about Ebay is being able to get your cashola back if you don't receive what was promised.

I've had to do this twice with some Celica and Corolla parts that I received..as long as you keep track of everything, and email the person for the exact condition of the parts...getting your cash back is pretty easy. ESPESCIALLY if they're from a tuning shop.

So far..I have a very vivid email correspondence with the sellers. Plus they're 10 minutes away from the Canada-Washington, US border.

By the way...wouldn't it be great to keep these as spares and get them upgraded? Do the BNR Stage 3 upgrade?

Sounds like a plan....espescially with all the good things I've been reading about BNR.

I bought my car with rebuilt turbos. They have about one years worth of driving on them (not sure about the mileage) and they run great. I had them checked out along with everything else the day after I bought mine. No problems yet(knock on wood)

And I hope you don't have any future problems...

I have seen that there can be quite a bit of pessimism about certain modifications....and a general air of doubt about the paths less taken...

xstacy7... that's a stud hole... in the upper right corner/downpipe-turbo flange...Studs are screwed in & torqued down...

New set of Stock Turbos... $2,800.00)
>Approximate Price
New Set, 99 Spec Turbos...$2,950.00)

Check out Malloy Mazda, speak to Ray Crowe, Mazda Parts Dept, for exact pricing information. Ray said that his place is now handling both..

Are you sure that $2800 is for both turbos? When I priced out new ones from the dealer about 6 months ago, it was like $3K per turbo (i.e., $6K for a new setup).

You obviously have a handle on this and know the value of a paper trail.

I would still PAY (did I say that?) for an expert opinion before parting with my hard earned cash. I really hate to say this, but E-bay is like having a bunch of felons running around just TRYING to do good people in. No matter how much you love the seller. Especially for the big dollar items. IMHO.

BTW, I think your idea of having them as spares is a great idea. A classic hedge, especially if you intend on keeping the car.

Like I said - due diligence. It's smart money.

If you don't buy them let me know.......

LOL...it's too late..

I lost the bid by 25 buckaroos..which can be a good thing. I've decided to save up for a single (or BNR Upgrade) and find out the status of my current turbos before going that route.

There was a small crack on the manifold, which I believe is normal..but I pretty much was hoping someone would outbid me at the end, simply because it would have taken a large chunk outta my budget for the reconditioning of my RX-7.

Once I find out if my turbos are really shot (they work fine now) is when I'll worry about the upgrade or rebuild.

I suppose it's smarter this way, although it would have been sweet to slap on some new ones.

I look at it this way..I'll have enough cash to get some upgraded twins if I want, or add intake, exhaust, catback..bla bla..if I didn't buy it.

So it's a good win...thanks for your constructive criticisms...you're extremely right...you have to be REALLY careful with Ebay.

My bottom line has always been if it ain't broke, don't fix it! Changing the oil frequently (it sounds goofy, but every 1500 miles) will keep your turbos VERY happy for a long time. They just love really clean oil.

The external cracks are normal for older units, and there are specs on them - to a great degree (no pun intended) they are cosmetic and formed from heat cycling. But for one hour of use? NO WAY.

You did the right thing by losing, especially since you could not inspect them personally.

The BNR saga continues....... I think you'll be much better off to wait and let others be the beta testers.
I still maintain the most OEM stuff is hard to beat for dependability IF you take care of it.

Later,

Yeps...the BNRs are definetly still inconclusive...I do like to take care of my car, I'm pretty **** about maintaining it.

Hopefully, there's still enough life in these turbos to keep'em rolling for awhile...if not..when they go, I'll have a reason to upgrade that my wife can't argue with.

I hope those BNRs turn out to be the stuff dreams are made of..that'd be real nice, because I am kinda partial to the sequential setup..don't know why.
