Question How much boost can my mildly upgraded fuel system handle?

I spoke to my mechanic who is doing the R&R on my motor. He said that my turbos are still good. However, they are showing signs of wear(50K miles), a little shaft play. He thinks they will die soon.

So, if I am going to need to replace the turbos soon anyway, I'd like to have some fun with them. I am wondering how much boost can I safley get out of them. Properly tuned, of course. 17-18 psi??? Turbo life not a consideration.

I'd like to join the club of 400+ rwhp on stock twins.

I (will)have 1300cc secondaries 550cc primaries & a Supra Fuel Pump along with all the other bolt on stuff:IC, Intake, HF Cat, Cat-Back, DP, Power FC, HKS Twin Power, streetport.

Thanks!

John

Why don't you just rebuild your turbos while you have the engine out?

Turbo City sells rebuild kits. $300.00 for the entire set for both stock turbos. It's really easy to rebuild as well.

With 1300 secondaries you will have no problem running 17-18psi.

Bucrx7, Cool!

Mor, I think my turbos are fine. At least they should be. They only have 50,000 miles on them. I hope they will last a while longer. That will give BNR some more time to work out the bugs with their stage 3's Then I'll get some of those.

There's no point in running the stock twins to 18 psi, because there's hardly any power gain from 14-15 to 18.

From what I've read, 15 is about the highest level you can go with still getting a power gain with the up in boost pressure.

Plus, why spend the $$$ tuning, then blow the turbos, then $$$ again?

Hey John, that hi-flow cat is going to be a limiting factor as well....

cavellm, Okay, maybe it isn't a good idea.

Tyler, I forgot that most of the guys making big power are running MP's.

better set aside about 1500 bones for tuning...or about a month on the datalogit and wideband if you are doing it yourself.....yer gonna need it because you wont get all that tuning done in one session...

there is only one person who broke 400 on stock twins and he is a tuning machine...yer gonna be making a lot of heat pushing that kind of boost...best get a radiator in there too as well as upgraded oil coolers and fans...

good luck....baby steps man...baby steps
