How much $$ to repair turbo

I have a 93 with about 33k miles on it. I have noticed the last couple of times driving the car that you can hear the turbo when it spools up. I never used to be able to so I am concerned that time and age have taken its toll. If at some point I have to have the turbo system (stock) repaired what am I looking at $$ wise? I am not looking to upgrade or anything. Just repair the stock twin turbo system.

Mark

Most likely your turbos are fine. I'd check other places - very possibly a boost leak. The stock turbos are actually rather hardy, and I'd be surprised if they were heading south with that low mileage.

i would agree that is low mileage for turbos to go, i would guess the typical lifespan to be about 70,000. check everything else well before going that route

Hmm

If I had a leak. Enough of one to hear it audibly would I still get secondary boost? I though I read here that if you have a signifigant leak that you would not get secondary boost.

I agree. There is almost no way they would go at that mileage unless you were at full boost 100% of the time and never cooled your car down.

also....$1800 to rebuild your stock turbos and put them in?!?!? You got

How so? Got a year warranty, if anything ever happens to them I get new ones? To have someone rebuild the turbos including parts with a year warranty is $1300. Then $490 for labor? The kit itself is like $700.

hmm, prices must be different in virginia...granted i took the turbos out myself...but a rebuild and instillation cost me 650
the labor was 200 so double it and it would of been 850
i dont think id be willing to pay 950 for a warranty. Granted these turbos were not too damaged, but I couldn't imagine how much damage it takes to get to THAT price.

Well, I had some sort of broken shaft, but still I don't know how you done it for that. Maybe I just got screwed. Also I am new to the whole turbo world so I don't know just how good I could have done it.

If were up to me, I'd go for a single turbo.

He used the word 'stock' multiple times in his post. Do you have any idea what kind of auxiliary mods have to be added to an FD to complement a single turbo upgrade? It sure as shinola ain't plug n play

I agree with what some others have stated, it is unlikely your turbos are bad.

Are you seeing any dark smoke out the tailpipe or in the intact tract? Also, what kind of noise are you hearing? Something like air escaping or more of a metal squealing sound?

Well, I think the thread starter wanted some constructive and useful information from people with first hand experience, that's all

The sound is hard to describe. It is not a metal on metal sound. Best way to describe it is that it is just louder. Reminds my of my old 86 300zx. You could hear that wind flowing through. I remember being dissapointed when I first got the RX because you could not hear the turbo airflow but I could on the Z. It is most likely me getting all panic'd. At any rate. No, no black smoke and no squealing of metal on metal. Who knows. When the evaporator core was replaced a few days ago maybe they left off some noise dampening material and I am just hearing what is natural.

maybe your ear is just attuned now to hearing the turbo spool. hearing spool up isnt an indicator, its a hissing sound with turbulent boost readings that should get you scared.

It wasn't your opinion,..it was your recommendation. BIG difference. GoodfellaFD3S is correct. Many Mods would have to be incorporated into a 13B-REW in order for it to function properly when going single.

Hogwash. You have your opinion/recommendation, he has his, and you don't have the right or ability to restrict speech on this forum, Mr Stalin.

And he is right. Silly recommendation.

ego tripping can be lots of fun!

now back to your question, do you have a boost guage in the car? if so are you boosting normally or is your gauge showing no boost? if you are hearing what sounds like a rush of air coming from the passenger side with you are under accelloration it is likely the the hose has been blown off of your y-pipe.

a lot of times oil will seep around the rubber collar and over time it will be blown off under pressure.

what i ended up doing is replacing the stock hose clamps with new ones with more tracks because the tracks on the stock clamps didn't allow the clamp to ge tight enough

nope

No boost gauge so I am in the dark. Only way I can judge boost is by my pants seat. It still moves out and you can hear the transition around 4500 to both turbo's. So I think all is ok just louder than it used to be. Can't believe I have owned that car for 11+ years.
