How many R1's are there

Hey, I am a newb in the market for an FD, and I was wondering if anyone knows the production numbers for the R1? The reason I ask is I was looking at an R1 nearby (which was sold before I could even contact the guy ) and he claimed in the ad that there were only 130 something black R1's ever made, making it extremely rare. However since then I've seen like 4 more black R1's for sale. Is this coincidence or is he full of crap?

Also, would the extra price tacked onto an R1 justify it over a base? Or could the advantages be made up easily? I definitely don't want leather or a sunroof so those are my only 2 options. The main differences I'm curious about are the suspension and oil coolers. I mean I can get an oil cooler from Summit for like 100 bucks and I'll probably end up replacing the suspension with something aftermarket.. although I hear the R1 seats are really nice too. Any help appreciated.

Oh yeah also.. hi, I'm new here.

If it has stock seats that aren't suede-like, it likely isn't an R1. Suspension really isn't important anymore, it will probably be swapped out anyway. And you could just add an oil cooler. Concentrate more on finding one in nice condition, then being an R1.

R1 seats are pimp. They're a fabric that's suede-like. Really comfortable and hold you in with the side bolsters. Look great too!

I was just curious if the R1 seats are different from the Base seats. I already know they rock.

Looks like I'll probably be getting a base, though.

base seats are fabric with a checkered texture and i believe they only came in black. R1 seats are a suede-like material.
In 1993, there were 638 black R1's made.
In 1994, there were 156 black R2's made.
In 1995, there were 18 black R2's made.
So yeah, any way you want to look at it, he is full of crap.

the 'pseudo suede' FD seats are, I believe, covered in a fabric called 'alcantara'

I believe it can be more expensive than leather.

Apparently the weave holds you in place during hard cornering.

I recommend that you forget about what model the FD is. You should try to find the nicest car car you can, at the price you want to pay.

You wouldn't want to miss a great deal on a great car because it had a sunroof.....unless you are 6'4"!!

A better question would be how many are left that were made in 1991 or 1992.

Mine, a BB R1 was made in March 92 and I have been flying it since July 92. Of course it is far from being stock
now.

I might be wrong.. but its harder to find base models then R1 or touring (PEP).. But thats my opinion.. I could be way off.. i prefer the base seats than R1..
