How many people have relocated their fuel filter?

How many people have relocated their fuel filter?
Where did you relocate it to?
Are their any reasons why not to relocate to the engine bay?
What filter did you use and how many microns did it filter?
How many microns does the stock fuel-filter filter?
How many microns should be used if using a aftermarket filter?

To me it appears that most of the bigger brands supply a fuel filter down to 10 microns for inline filtration, so that’s probably the correct rating, though I would like to get an idea from others that have experience with the issue.

I would like to get a filter that has –6 ports on it and is not extravagantly priced, though I haven’t found one that fits those parameters so I will probably just bend over and buy one of the aeromotive units and convert to –6.

Any input guys?

its like $75 for the red one, and like $138 or something for the super top secret black coating on the other one that is identical but black.

I dont even know where the stock fuel filter is. Is it easy to get to? Must not be if you guys relocate it. Ive had my car for a little over a year and I think I should change it. Who could I take it to to get it changed? Could I do it myself?
Thanks

I like the aeromotive ones a lot to CJ but they are so expensive for what they do, and I just don’t want to be one of those guys that dump $100s into a fuel system when $25 could do the entire thing and work just as well.

I went bling bling for all the stuff in front that is viewable but stuff that will get tucked away I could care less about the reveal, I just want it to work well.

In the end I will almost certainly get the red aeromotive one, I was just looking for other options. I know k&n makes a good 10 micron but it has nipples instead of an fittings and I have already converted the stock lines to AN ends so I don’t want to cut those off just so I can get a filter in their or convert back and forth.

Anyone else have any info on which filter they used to replace their stock filter, and the cost?

The BLACK ONE has a Stainless Steel Mesh washable/reusable filter element - as opposed to a disposable paper element in the red one. That's why its so Expen$ive

I have that one, mounted in the engine bay with teflon quick disconnects....it has a washable/reusable element that works very well but you have to clean it about every 2-3k miles or it gets overloaded and may even fail

I'm always amazed at how much crap it catches, I clean mine about every 2k...I can do it in about 5 minutes with no tools

btw, that filter has been discontinued, apparently because they were having complaints that the service life was too short and/or failures of the disc type element...I emailed K&N and they declined to provide a specific reason of why it was discontinued

The stock one is located in front of the fuel tank, up high. When you try to change it you get dowsed with fuel, unless you know the "secret handshake". I use mini clamps to close off the hoses before disconnecting them. Still not easy, as there is -NO ROOM-.

Stand by for some headaches if you are doing it yourself. It's located above the differential and it is a pain in the **** to get to. Strongly suggest you change it ASAP.

Um not necessarily, I know I grabbed the stainless mesh pic of the black one, but that was just disregarding the fact that the stainless mesh was in the pic.

And from what I understand the stainless mesh 100 microns stainless is for prepump, and the 10 micron paper element is for inline between the pump and rail.

this is the summit price brake down

Black body Paper media 10 micron Paper media 2x5 AEI-12306 142.99
Black body Paper media 100 micron stainless 2x5 AEI-12306 171.69

Red body paper media 10 micron Paper media 2x5 AEI-12301 Straight through design, flows 1,200 lbs/hr 79.95
Red body paper media 100 micron stainless 2x5 AEI-12304 Straight through design, flows 1,200 lbs/hr 89.95

Red body paper media 10 micron Paper media 2.5x7 AEI-12310 N/A
Red body paper media 100 micron stainless 2.5x7 AEI-12302 129.95

so to get an identically configured black one it will cost you an additional 63.04 for 10 micron paper and 81.74 for the 100 micron stainless filter.

Are there any other manufacturers that I havent been able to find that carry similar facsimiles of the aeromotive one.

Planning to get the one with the 100 mircon. Do you think that would be good enough if I just use that one by itself? just afraid that something will go to the rail!!!

I don't know, but from what I have gathered from reading about the different filters is that the ten micron filter is the one to use between the pump and the rail/injectors.
I think that the pump has a much higher tolerance for debris than say an injector, so it can easily operate correctly with 100 micron particles running through it.
Also that 100 microns may be a bit large to be running through the injectors, and could prematualy block flow and lean out you injectors.
