How do I remove plastic extension from metal water pipe?

How do I remove this plastic extension piece from the metal pipe connected to the block?

Is it necessary to use this plastic piece or will the water hose fit snugly on the metal pipe?

I've just used the metal pipe for some time now. It isnt exaclty the quick disconnect that mazda discribes it as.

If you look closely you can see at the rear larger side of the plastic part a little edge. One on top and one on the bottom. IF you push the lip down a little while pushing the entire plastic pipe in towards the engine it will go down slightly. Then you may have to push down the popped up tab that is visible in the opening on each side of it. With a little finagling it will come off. You have to work one side and hold pressure on it and then work the other side tab. I had no problem getting it off after I looked at the new one. its just a matter of understanding how its held on. I hope that was clear enough because its hard to describe the working of this thing. I bought a new one from Malloy, I think it was $10 dollars.

Just push squeeze and pull, there are two tabs that have to move below the retention stirps. The piece you want to take a screwdriver and pry against. Just use your finger or a screwdriver to push in the tabs. If you do break it and don't want to buy a new one many have just put the hose right on the pipe. Jack

Thanks again.

It is off. Basically, I squeezed the tabs, although it was more difficult then it sounds.
