how do i check motor mounts?

I know my motor mounts are bad because I can shake my engine side to side pretty easily and the transmission feels like it is moving around alot too. The problem is that the dealer wants $250 for each mount, and I dont want to replace both if i dont have to.

What is the procedure to check if my mounts are bad? do i need to take them off to find out?

I think you have to remove the oil pan as well. I tried to find some info on this one time, coudln't really find anything other than the "LIghting World of thunder" website. I guess most people replace engines so frequently, that they never become and issue for many.

Engine mounts in rear-wheel drive cars are not that prone to breaking, and when do not as bad as fron-wheel drive. I don;t know about rotary though.

The driver's side motor mount (and maybe the passenger side, not sure) is a hydro mount. I knew mine was bad because there was all kinds of sticky goo on the outside. If the goo is still inside the mount, it is probably fine.
