Question hose on right side of air filter

what is the hose on the right side of the air filter for; and, is it harmful to drive with it disconnected?

If you took the filter off and looked at it, and/or looked in the Mazda manual; you might have learned on your own what it is.

In simplest terms, it is a muffler exit hose. Excess air from the air pump is discharged back into the atmosphere through the small muffler in the air filter top and then out the hose. All of this to prevent what is called the moo-fart sound that may be heard with after market intake/filter systems.
