Hmmmm....first drive results....won't accelerate past 4K....

Okay, so this is trying my patience a bit. Took the car out, and it is just real doggy, and simply will not rev past 4K under load. It does it just fine while parked, but while driving it doesn't seem to like much of any throttle.

Any idea where to start? I don't have a check engine light or anything.

I was under the impression this was a recent rebuild. And if that is the case i don't think it's a good idea to go over 4k especially under load....

5K is the recommended limit with low boost only for the first 150 miles or so.
Then 6K but stay out of boost for another couple of hundred miles or so.
Then full rpm range but once again, stay out of the high boost until 1000 miles or so has been reached.

Or so the Rotary Aviation rebuild video says anyway.

This is just something weird. I am thinking fuel pump or double-throttle problems....unless I got some damned vacuum line mixed up somewhere.......

As well as check to see if you are getting any ECU codes which aren't triggering the CEL.

As in grounding the 10 pin in the diagnostics box?

Okay, when I ground the 10 pin to the ground pin in the box, I get code 51, which if I am reading the FSM correctly it says it is the fuel pump relay. There are several diagnostics to check on this which I'll do. But it seems odd that the car starts and runs and idles perfectly.
Or is that code 15, which is for the oxygen sensor.....let's see, I get 5 flashes, a pause and then 1 flash.

5 long flash and one short flash is 51.

I have actually witnessed this as a problem that's the only reason I list it. Are the couplers on all of the intake pipes clamped tight, if not, under load air would not stay in them very well.

I am not sure if that means the fuel pump speed relay or the main fuel pump relay.

But the two-speed fuel pump system works by running a resistor in series with the fuel pump for low speed, and then the speed relay effectively removes the resistor from the circuit when it is activated, giving full speed. So, if that relay was bad, I would expect the car to work fine at idle and low speeds when the pump would be running at low speed anyway. And then you might run out of fuel under higher loads, when the pump would normally be running at high speed. Fuel pressure drops when pump running at low speed can't keep up, resulting in too little fuel being delivered. That might be consistent with the symptoms you are witnessing.

I don't know where the wires are, but you could test this by replacing the speed relay with a wire (to act like the relay is always on). That would keep the pump at full speed.

^ Thanks, max. I was wondering about the same thing after reading thru damned near the entire FSM....lol! I think the reason I had the code for the fuel pump relay is....I had the relay out when I was first cranking the engine to build oil pressure. I will clear the code tonight after work and see if I get it again.
I really can't (or don't want to!) believe this is very serious, as the car starts and idles so well. I may just have swapped a vacuum line or two around wrong, I had a couple of doubts about 2 of the 4 lines that run in that small steel manifold that bolts to the front of the front turbo air pipe......

As I suspected, the fuel pump relay fault I was getting was caused by having it out when I was first cranking it. I cleared the code and it is gone now. So....I'm going to go do another test drive just to see if something cleared up on its own (yeah, I know......) and then I guess I'll start taking things back off and checking vacuum lines and coils and the like.

Okay.......it is FIXED!

It must have been that fuel pump code keeping the pump on low pressure or something....
Once I cleared that it works like a charm! And I damned near didn't take it on that test drive....I was just about ready to start yanking stuff off.

Okay, this is back to officially "cool" status.

I do have a leak on the airpump that is annoying, I think I cracked one of the rubber hoses that goes back by the UIM. I'll fix that and be in like Flint!

That sounds great! I only had time to get my tranny all tightened down last night. I plan to hopefully get mine started this weekend. Taking my time no rush, my car has been down for over a year. I need to do it right.

Happy for you!

Yep. That fuel pump relay only switches to high speed as max said. At low speed it will start and idle and accelerate very slowly but without high speed the car falls flat on its face if you try to accelerate hard. The car usually pops like mad out the tailpipe when doing so as well.

^ I just wonder how many times someone has pulled the fuel pump fuse when the engine was flooded and got it un-flooded, only to be faced with a 'low-speed/pressure pump only' situation due to the ECU saying, "uh....wait a minute here...." ?

Congrats on finding the fix. Unfortunately when I was fussing with my injectors I must have cleared the ECU a dozen times...

Hmm, I'm leaving my FD at a shop for an inspection - is there a way I can set this code before I leave so that they can't take it out for a fun drive?

(Actually, I just write down the exact odometer reading)
