Hit over 9K rpm on accident....

ok so i was coming off an exit ramp accelerating , when i was in 3rd gear at 7200rpm, i shifted into 2nd on accident. the rpms went over 9k, can anyone calculate the exact rpm for me? also could it have damaged anything? it was for 1 sec. i herd of some balance problems after 9k but thats continous , just wondering if anything could be damaged. thanks in advance.

I doubt you hurt anything, dont you have a rev limiter? Why not set ot to 7800rom so you dont have to worry about it?

If you overrev by downshifting, a rev limiter will not save you. The wheels are forcing the engine to go at 9k+.

Many Celica GT-S owners have lost their engines this way. They rev it up to 7000+ in 3rd, clutch it, pull down on the shifter (thinking that they got 4th), pop the clutch, and BANG!!!!...they got 2nd and 10k RPM.

Fortunately for rotaries, they have no valve springs to float.

OOPS!!

You probably didn't hurt anything. Gear to rpm ratios are a straight line. It should be fairly easy to calculate if you check 2 speeds in 2nd gear. For example (estimates):

2nd gear 45mph ~ 4500 rpm
2nd gear 55mph ~ 6000 rpm
2nd gear 85mph ~ 10500 rpm
3rd gear 90mph ~ 7200 rpm

My guess is that you were around 11000 rpm if you were in 2nd at around 90 mph. It probably wasn't that high, but it may have been close.

Thanks for pointing that out, I hastely replied and didn't notice that the over rev was caused by down shifting.

yeah right has anyone seen that send the rotary to hell video where the guy tries to intentionally blow the motor by revving it to like 9,000 and it doesnt pop for like 7 minutes

wow 11k , thats pretty high i need to learn to shift better. i was kicking my own *** after it happend. glad the rotary handles high rpm well. if anything was damaged what could it be? i sat in my car and let it idle for a while and didnt notice any vibrations.

I bet the downshift slowed you down a bit, too -- so if you were at 90 MPH and jammed it into second, you'll drop 5-10 MPH pretty quickly. Or you will lock up the rear wheels. I doubt you hurt anything, even if it was 90 MPH after you let out the clutch.

Godzilla is talking about your flywheel shattering from the tremendous stress that 11K RPM puts on the flywheel. That can be real bad for your legs.

Redline is 8k, why set the limiter to 7800 rpm? Unless you use the 7500 rpm "warning" as the redline.

you get off an exit that fast?!?!?!?!

jeez, hope you did that NOT during rush hour...

but yeah, i doubt you hurt anything, i mean if you "downshifted", you eventually braked right? unless you meant to shift it to 4th but accidently shifted to 2nd instead?

either way, you rev limiter saved you, i bet the car jerked right? otherwise, it would've bounced on the rev limit until you matched that speed..

Had that happen to a buddy of mine. Flywheel broke apart, and a big piece ripped through the bell housing and took off a chuck of his leg (a big portion of his calf muscle, and a small chip off the bone)....

Dont you usually get "rotor skip" on the rotor housing when you over rev and that creates a loss of compression ?

again, a rev limiter cant do crap when the wheels are mechanically forcing it to rev that high

why is it that peopel don't rev higher with our engines? i mean hp = tq x hp

is it that there is not enough flow? or too much heat?

Usually we run out of power. If you have the ports and the turbo to flow, then you can rev higher as long as you have power. Then you run into prolems like the Apex seals skipping. It all depends on the setup. Some of the N/A rotaries rev to the moon when they are bridge ported or periferral ported with carbon apex seals and what not.

Not just that but I mean some turbos just cant handle that much revving especially not the stockers.

+ The stock exhaust is high restrictive.

yeah, i think my mindset is still stuck in the N/A world. I guess you just don't need those kinds of revs to make the power.
