highest hp producing exhaust?
Theyre all good. An extra 1.2hp is not going to help you win the race.
Better reasons to choose an exhaust: sound, appearance.
And; to answer your question, I am unaware of any official testing to compare exhausts with. There are just too many variables. I would say the racing beat, m2, pfs, SMB, greddy sp2, etc would all be slightly lower. Whereas the Apexi GT spec, HKS hiper, any straight through loud as ***** canister would provide an extra couple ponies. Youll be gaining more dB than horsepower.

Yes, too many choices and vairables to have clear cut answer. I do not know of any dyno tests that would have gone through all CBs.
Years ago I tested a few exahusts by my accelerations tests that went from 60-160 MPH and, obviously, a 3" straight pipe cat back came out the winner, being a full second+ quicker to 160 than the rest.
I agree that the straight through canister types would likely be the least restrictive and also the loudest.

The highest performance is a dump pipe. But I don't consider that an exhaust.
Are you talking about a muffler? Full exhaust system? Do you expect to pass emissions? Do you care about obnoxious noise and odor? Street car or race car?
If you aren't already aware, any catless exhaust system on an FD brings up a serious risk of boost creep. Stock turbos need to have the wastegate ported in order to control boost when you are running a straight-thru setup.

That is the only way (besides a dyno run for every single change you make) to cut throught BS claims from manufacturers of aftermarket parts. Some manufacturers of aftermaket parst claim wildly exedurated gains. Tests, like 60-160 run 4 times, two in each direction for wind factor, leave little doubt as to the effectiveness of a component in raising or dropping horse power levels.
Too bad I no longer have the access to that little-used freeways section. For one, I moved, and more importantly, the traffic had picked up on that section exponentially.

For a while in south richmond, Va they were constructing highway 288. They constructed an unconnected section and we hosted many a drag event on the unopened, unreachable(unless you knew) highway.

hey barban, do you live near va beach area? as i was making down the east coast i saw a few red FDs one was in a overhang and the other one was driving. the guy had blonde hair and glasses and his console gauges were blue, and everything else looked stock (maybe lowered). just wondering if anybody knew him?
Has any one actually documented the HP gains from running just a turn down off of the downpipe? What would the gains be over a typical 3' exhaust? Any detrimental effects to the car by doing this? such as throw the timing/tune way off to the point where it may hurt your car.

PS you forgot functionality :P
About the dump pipe, i would think that running it open at the base of the DP with no restriction and then flipping the thing closed so it has to go through the full exhaust would cause some problems....it's got to be hard to tune the motor for different amounts of backpressure. My friend has one on his WRX and that thing gets so freakishly loud when it's open. More noise than power i would say. He says that it kills his bottom end but his top end has a lot more power.

I didnt mean a butterfly for the exhaust, i was speaking just of a down pipe turn down. Its just a small extension off of the downpipe that angles, or turns down to keep any flames from heading back towards the gas tank. Any one have any experience with this?

Im trying.
