high temps

Hope someone has some insight into this. Today in Dayton Ohio, I took my third gen out. Its about 85-90 today. While in traffic, and just before the traffic, I left it running with the AC on, (wife in car), the temps steadily climbed to 110C, on the commander, and 230F from the sensor hooked to my AST. Temps only went down when I hopped to the highway for a quick speed pass. Went down to 200F, and 95C. I typically run at 180-190F.

Koyo rad, aluminum AST, underdive pulley, open intake and exhaust, (high fow cat), Rp fuel pump, 850 primaries, power FC, set at .9bar, though I rarely see it.

My thoughts: change thermostat, coolant, I do not hear any wierd noise to make me think the water pump is going bad.

Any suggestions, that high a temp CANNOT be right!!

Thank you

Turning on the AC should turn on your fans. Check to see if they are working correctly.

Your car will heat up while sitting in traffic, unless you run the fans. Especially on a hot day. I suggest you do the "fan mod". I don't have the link, so do a search for "rob robinette fan mod". Do the search from your home page, not this site.

When sitting in traffic there is very little ram-air flow through the radiator. Your water temp is about 10 C higher than mine--I'm @ 100 C sitting in traffic @ 85 F ambient temps with A/C full blast.

I have the rad fans set to come on low speed @ 86 C and @ high speed @ 87 C--so the fans are running full blast when water temps hits 100 C sitting in traffic. With the Power FC, you should be able to change your water temp fan settings from the Commander module.

IMHO 100 C, 212 F, is no big deal. I've run 110 C to 115 C (230 F to 239 F) in ambient temps of 85 F on the track--Putnam Park Road Course Mt Meridian IN--for 20 to 25 minute lapping sessions (now that's HOT!).

On a sidenote--Putnam Park Road Course is very hard on cars because it's a short track (1.77 miles/lap) with short straights. It's also a fast track where you're cornering @ speed, in 3rd gear between 4000 and 7000 rpm, 90% of the way around the track (I only pick up 4th gear down the front straight between turns 10 and 1). See the aerial view of the track here www.putnampark.com Lapping @ larger tracks like Mid Ohio Sports Car Course, my water temps don't like higher than 100 C (212 F). Mid Ohio has longer straights to help with cooling down the radiator.

Because heat killed my original motor (102,543 miles)--I Kim and Dave Barninger (KDR Performance Inc) install silicone O-ring gaskets in my KDR/Malloy motor (6000 miles old). See my "Speed Sauce Racing Rx7 R1" sig link for more info.

I've had my car up to temps of 240F too (my radiator had decided to leak coolant at a bad time). It won't kill your car, but it's not suggested to run at that temp for an extendid duration of time. When sitting there, air is not passing through the car, which will cause the temps to rise. 180F is about normal, but it depends on the air temps. I can be a good bit lower, or higher in the summer. Do you have single, or dual oil coolers? You may consider upgrading these. You should also consider doing the fan mod, as it's fairly easy to do, and greatly helps reduce temps.

I recently sealed all of the air gaps where air could escape on each side of the radiator/AC condensor area. This has made a HUGE difference. Also, lowering your water to coolant mix to about 10-20 percent coolant to 80-90 percent water will help a lot.

I also agree with Sleep R1 on the PFC fan settings. My R1 is currently setup for low fans at 89C and high fans at 95C. Last night crusing on the freeway here in Phoenix with outside ambient temps near 106F, my operating temps never got higher than 95C (~205F) with the AC on the entire time. With AC off, those numbers will drop an additional 4 to 5C.

Sealing EVERY air gap in the frontal "mouth" area and increasing the amount of water in your coolant mix should help considerably. Also, the underdrive pulley may be contributing to slightly higher temps versus stock. Not sure since I've always run stock pulleys but it seems to make sense that the car would run a little warmer with the pump underdriven!
