disregarding the aws my engine still idles higher at startup than when it's warmed up. after i tap the gas to disengage the aws, it still idles at around 1400rpm or so. when it's warmed up it's below 1k. why is this, and why does my car smoke so much at startup? i know it's fuel because i can smell it, why does the engine run so rich at startup?

ALL cars idle higher when they are cold, in fact there's a term for it -- fast idle. ALL cars also run richer when the engine is cold. Haven't you noticed this with any other car you've driven? They all do it. Damn, I think us FD owners are just a LITTLE too paranoid at times....

Then welcome to the troves of rotary owners that... own ... uhhh... rotaries.... damn guys this is basic stuff....

When your engine is smoking alot is it in the morning? Cuz chances are the richness of the rotary coupled with... uhhh whats it called? Oh yeah condensation! (you know how you can blow "smoke" as you call it in the morning?)

Also any Rx7 that is getting a little bit of coolant in the combustion chamber is going to give off a little bit of blue (sweetish smelling) smoke until the engine warms up to operating temp.

These are the facts of rotary life... and have been discussed to DEATH... Anyone who owns an FD and is asking about this sort of stuff on here now, obviously didnt do enough (I emphasive enough because although I am sure you probably did research some it most likely wasnt enough )

...and Im spent....

Cheers,
Catlin

i know fd's smoke a lot at startup, i'm asking why it was designed that way. it's definitely just fuel, i'm just wondering why the ecu was designed to dump so much fuel at startup.

When I was referring to other cars, I was talking about the high idle at start-up, not the smoke part.

Your FD should not really smoke much at start-up. Maybe a little bit of blue from oil burning off but that's about it. If your car is smoking heavily other than just the normal water vapor, you have a problem. If the smoke is white, your coolant seals are going bad. If it's blue, you are getting excessive oil burn-off. Too much fuel would usually be indicated by black smoke. Also, if you have a downpipe, your car will smell bad when you first start it until the main cat warms up enough.

Yup, my car has a DP and it is a little stinky at startup. I don't know how it would smell normally at startup since I bought my car with the DP but once it is warm, it smells fine. My car revs up in the morning, but not all the time. I kick it off anyway, I hate that cold revving.
