High pitched noise from front left wheel.

Ok, as of the last few days when I'm driving the FD between 20 and 40 miles an hour or so I get this horrendous high pitched noise from the front left wheel area. It sounds almost as if metal were rubbing against metal. It lessens as I apply the brakes and turn the wheel left. Also the noise is almost non-existent as I go below twenty and above 40. I'm thinking its a hub bearing, but I could be wrong. Anyone have any idea what it could be and if they do whats the estimated cost for the part and is it something I could replace myself? Or do you guys need more info?

Alex

It's either brakes or the wheel bearing. Jack up the car, pull the wheel, and do a visual on it. Might be really thin brake pads, the metal brake backing plate rubbing - could be any number of things.

I had the same problem and it went away when I retighened the wheel lug bolts to factory spec. My mechanic had recently removed the wheel to get at the Turbo control actuator and went overboard when retightening it. It may have just been coincidence, but I figured I'd throw it out there.
