Does anyone have any suggestions on getting my AC fixed??

I have gone 2 summers w/o AC. Was told by a dealership that I needed a new compressor. At $1,200 I said no way. Had the car checked by a mechanic who works at the shop where I had the car painted. He told me the compressor and the lines were leaking. I decided to have the compressor remaned, replace the lines and convert to 134. Did all that and it still didn't work.

Took it to a guy recommeded by a friend and fellow FD owner. He got it to blow cold air, but it didn't last, plus it caused the engine to damn near stall out when I came to light or stopped.

I have had the car checked again by a radiator shop. Was told I need new: compressor, dryer, condensor, expansion valve, and one new line. (appearently there is a line that runs under the battery tray that is leaking)

Contacted another dealership to check on parts (one that I think has a good rep with FD owners). Was told @ $1800 and 8 hours of work.

Before I go this route and spend EVEN MORE $$$ Does anyone out there have any suggestions??
