I have a FD that smokes heavily out of the tailpipe at cold start, once the engine warms up smoke clears and drives fine, no issues making power and no hesitation with the engine starting whether its cold or warm. I was told by the previous owner the issue was a bad turbo, assuming this is the diagnosis I start removing the factory twins and was in the process of swapping to another set of used twins I notice there a visual noticeable difference between #1 and 2 exhaust ports, one appears to be noticeably wet while the other is dry. I'm concerned there could be something else causing the smoking issue and it has to do with #1 rotor. Should I be worried about this? Could a sticking fuel injector cause this? I haven't installed the turbo back on yet as I'm waiting for a couple of exhaust studs to come in the mail. The car is pretty much stock, I removed the cat and installed a catless midpipe to prevent from killing a factory cat.

 

It almost looks like you're burning oil in the front rotor. Does the car use oil faster than normal?

The good thing is if it's a bad oil seal in the engine that's the best case candidate for a rebuild. Typically you can re-use damn near everything.

What color was the "smoke"? Is there a slightly sweet smell or is it definitely blue smoke from burning oil?

 

It's definitely a oil smell that comes out the tail pipe. I was under the assumption if a oil seal is bad it would smoke heavily at all times?

 

My second gen did the same thing. On cold start up my engine would smoke and then as the coolant temp started to rise the smoking started to go away. Eventually once the engine was fully warmed up it didnt smoke at all. The problem was the oil control seals.

 

Bummer, I plan on installing the replacement twins I'll install on the car and confirm it still smokes, if it does then i'll consider my options. Can I rule out that this wouldn't be a omp issue or fuel injector issue?

 

From the way you are describing it sounds like the oil control rings in the engine. The dead give away is if the smoke goes away when fully warmed up and is not smoking while driving under load then its the engine oil control seals. If your turbo oil seals are shot then it will smoke cold or warm and especially under boost.
