Help: remove front cover in engine bay, loud ticking from front of engine
93 rx7 pettit intake, dp, asp med ic, powerfc, 5spd. I had a recent thread on putting asp med with midpipe, but did not try midpipe.
On my way home from jccs this weekend my rx7 developed a loud ticking from front of engine. Recent rebuild, bearings were in good shape. I removed serpentine belt and ran for a few seconds without any accessories and i still have a loud ticking sound form front of engine. Engine is still strong and boosts, holds vacuum.
I'm gonna remove the front cover. Are there any precautions or techniques so that the torrington bearings don't get pinched? Also any idea what sound could be?

It's really hard to say what it could be. I'm glad you pulled the belts off and verified it wasn't an accessory making the noise.
If you're going to get into the front cover, pull the engine. You'll be WAY ahead labor and pain-in-the-*** wise. You have to drop the oil pan, pull the water pump housing, remove the PS/AC bracket....trying to do that in the car is EXTREMELY difficult.
I would pull the engine then check your end play on the engine before you pull the front cover. It's quite possible it's a pinched needle bearing. If so, it's not too hard to fix out of the car, fix it up and you don't have to crack the rest of the motor open.

Thanks a lot Dale. I personally rebuilt the engine and the endplay was within spec, but it may have been pinched like you said. Damn I already paid for the track day at sevenstock too

Hell yeah problem fixed, seems that the cas wheel ( attached to main pulley) had been bent slight so it was hitting the cas (wich also broke). Luckily I had a spare and noise is now gone
