Help With Power Problem
Well the car is not owned by me but my cousin. I was just trying to get some help on an issue we have.
He just finished his first modification on his car, he upgraded the exhaust to 3 inch and also added a down pipe. My question is, why does the car only come to life in 1st and 2nd gear, its like after that it slows down bad. And also its like he only makes power from 3,000rpms to 6,000rpms.
The car other then these modification is stock. We had the car fully checked for any boost leak problems but everything is fine. Would a boost controller and front mount intercooler help this problem? Also what psi does the car come stock? How high can you boost safe with only front mount intercooler, and exhaust down pipe? Any feedback would help, thank you.

Answers to all of your questions are available through the search function.
What is your boost pattern (do you have a boost gauge, if not get one then try to trouble shoot)?
First off, the turbos spool at 2900-3000 rpm (hence the power from 3K). If you are not getting any power above 6K, there's most likely an ignition break up (plugs, wires etc.)
Stock boost pattern is 10-8-10 with the primary turbo comming on @ ~2900 rpm and secondary @4300 rpm.
Boost controller and fmic are performance enhancements, not band aids for trying to mask a problem. Find the problem, fix it then worry about upgrades.

Yes I am familiar with the “search” I did it and came up short. Thanks for the feedback, I will tell him to have his plugs and wires checked, and also to install a boost gauge. we were told form a shop that the reason the car was not making a lot of power up top was because of the exhaust and dp we added, the guy said the boost needs to be rasied to make up for the better exhaust flow.
