Help me fix my car! Boost, ignition, fuel, idle problems

Ok, i've searched and searched, and i think that i might have found some answers to my problems. Let me lay out the story for you.

6 months ago, i blew my engine, i rebulit my engine with all new seals, rotor housings and all that nice stuff. Everything on the car is practically new. My grounds are solid also.

I race ported the engine, its using 1300cc sec, 550cc pri, PFC, m2 i/c, intake, dp, mp, fp, cb non seq, no emissions, no nuthin. bare bones people.

Ok my problems are annoying, and plan on fixing them, i think this would make a great thread to help others as i have found through searching that most people after a rebuild have the same problems as i do.

Coolant- I removed the AST with the m2 kit, and somehow now i have sprung a leak on my turbos. Simple fix, the crush washers or its loose and it will be fixed.

Idle - my car loves to idle above 1500rpms and sometimes it will idle at 800, but rarely. I plan on doing a TPS adjustment as well as the idle set screw. I'll keep you posted on what I find.

Oil leaks - i've had many from the pan to the oil level sensor to what i now think is one of the oil cooler lines on the engine.. so i'll check that out and keep you posted. Its coming from the driver side and leaks 5-10 drops ever night.. its hard to tell with the aeropan on.

Bucking - The car has polyurethane mounts, so that ends that argument, however I experience bucking at WOT and on decel. My thoughts are that I will be able to fix these with the TPS adjustment, we'll see? the injectors phase back on if the car reaches 3200rpms on decel, causing the bucking and making for crappy decel.

The WOT bucking is still a mystery? the car has a new fpd, fpr, fuel lines, hoses and fuel filter. checked the ignitor, and coils and plug wires. all OK. Going to put in new plugs again. I know that i'm running rich, but its getting insane. I'm going to try new maps to see if i can't solve the fuel richness problem.

I've had the weirdest coolant leak before where i would brake and coolant would enter the engine and go out the exhaust found that it was a loose coolant hose on the turbos. it was causing the coolant to drip into the turbos and cause the smoke.

Boost - my car before i put a Profec B would not make past 7psi of boost, (per the wastegate set spring) and that fixed the problem. Though now i cannot make past 5psi of boost and cannot go past 4k rpms under WOT. Thinking that its my plugs? plug wires? TPS? Its one problem after another.

Oil pressure guage - it doesn't work... sits always at 0. The sending unit is new, the connections are clean... could it be a short? a bad internal gauge? it read crappy before the rebuild.. now it doesn't work at all?

So after searching and reading all night, these are my suggestions to fix my problems.. If anyone else has similar problems or input that could help, it would be greatly appreciated. I'd like to get her on the dyno soon, but I need to sort out all these problems. Thanks again to anyone who can help.

Wow, nice headach you have there...If I was in your position I would take it to Pettit Racing and have them work on it ...I think they are your closest performance rotary shop.

eh, i'm capable of working on it myself. Just some of the things have been headaches for a while and i don't have a garage like i used to, so that makes things a little more of a hassle. I'm taking it on base this friday to use the lifts so i can get these leaks taken care of. The other stuff i'll try out wednesday.

Have you found the WOT bucking problem? Curiously, I have the same issue and have recently done many of the same mods as you. As you know JAX, my car (94 black touring) has been sitting at Speed Craft for about 5 months as they have attemped to fix the problem. Am planning on picking up the car this weekend and taking it to Pettit.

well i haven't found the problem yet, i just got home from working on the SOB. I found myself a vacuum leak and i rerouted all my grounds. I checked the resisitance on my coilpacks and they are all within limits. I fixed my decel and idle by fixing the vacuum leak and adjusting my TPS.

I'll keep you posted to let you know if I have cured my WOT bucking. we'll see!?

If you'd like to talk to me personally, give me a call (904)307-6246

Well i got in the car and my idle was fixed, but sometimes it will idle incorrectly again.. which is very odd. I'm sure i have a short somewhere in my harness, i'm also going to replace my plug wires and see if that changes anything and clean up the battery terminals. But gimme a call, maybe we can help each other out.

found a big vacuum leak, that sounds similar to regular belt whine. So it was hard to diagnose, someone who never heard the car before found the noise. My friend sprayed the Lower intake manifold near where it contacts the block, and it seems that my LIM metal gasket is leaking, or loose, or something allowing unmetered air and boost to leak, (ie stuttering under boost, and lumpy idle) so this seems to be the ticket, check your car for that area David. We sprayed the area with carb/choke cleaner and it killed the engine, so check that area.. its a bitch to fix, you have to pull the turbos to get to the LIM.

hope that sheds some light. i plan on fixing my leak friday the 18th, if its not too busy on base. So i'll keep you updated on here or by phone.

Good luck with that, sounds like a BEAST when you get it working.

yeah it should be capable of low 12s on street tires at around 118~120mph. I pretty much copied a setup of a friend of mine who has ran over 118mph in the 1/4 on the stock twins.

If you want, i can take a look at your car, less its already down at pettit? Lemme know.

It's not at Pettit yet. Tracy wanted to try adding an MSD ignition to see if it fixed the problem. Don't know yet.

Thanks for the offer of looking at the car. I might take yuo up on this.

Well, miracles do happen. Was at SppedCraft last night and the car is fixed. They found a loose ground strap - helped fix sime of the problem but not all of it. They then swapped out the stock spark plugs for 10mm's and then problem is now gone. Cross your fingers but it looks like I'll be back on the road by Saturday!

Recap - car wouldn't produce power at WOT. Replaced fuel pump with Denso unit. Upgraded injectors to 850cc and 1300cc. Found vacuum hose leak. Pulled turbos and sent back to Turbonetics for seal replacement. Double and triple checked AEM ECU. Found ground strap problem. Replaced spark plug wires with 10mm. Tested all coils and ignitors. Swapped out spark plugs to 10mm. Problem solved! Easy right?

Anyway, I've asked Tracy to put on a MSD ignition amp also. Supposed to go in for final tuning Friday and back to me Saturday.

So no Pettit needed and hopefully I'll be a happey RX7 owner by Saturday!

Let me know who it's going with your car.

well thats great to hear! Yeah, those ground straps, if done incorrectly can lead to all sorts of hell. So i'm guessing you had 8.5mm plug wires before? and you went to upgrade to the 10mm? well i'll keep you updated on my car. I'd still love to see yours.

Had stock wires and plugs in the car. Both were replaced to 10mm. Car is supposed to be tuned tomorrow and I've asked them to put a resonator on the mid-pipe. Too darn loud. Let's see if I actually get the car back by Saturday. If so, I'll call you early next week to arrange a get together.

FYI Pete, Izzak with the To4 2nd gen had a very similar problem as your's & it turned out to be a bad secondary injector O-ring leaking boost & fuel...

Eric, Bryan found a leak at my Lower Intake manifold, the gasket is leaking for some odd reason (even though its new, and everything looks tight) so i'm replacing it tomorrow on base. I'll give you a call and let you know how it goes. so i guess it could be leaking boost as well as fuel from that point...

No, I upgraded them to twin turbos from Turbonetics. 50% larger, tuff turbo option. They are now tied into parallel also. I've always said if I had to do it over again, I'd go single turbo, but Cameron Worth, owner of Pettit Racing, states this would be a mistake and I should consider going back to sequential. He states that the "lag" will kill me during passing and that you have to rev much higher to pass and keep the turbos (or turbo if single) spooled. I'll check this out once I get my car back which didn't happen Saturday. The latest is now tomorrow. We'll see - the car looks great though. Saw it and checked out the progress on the car.

Still screwed. Just ordered an HKS ignition amp - we'll see. Will also be off line for about a week. Hope you are having success.
