HELP!! How to replace hatch lift shocks

I have a 93 and cannot for the life of me figure out how to replace the suckers. Any ideas or experience with this?

Thanks,
Zach

I've yet to replace mine, but looking at the workshop manual diagram and my car, I see really only 2 possible ways to go about it.

The body side of the struts are unbolted, obviously. Now the tricky part:

It either pops off the hatch-mount ball joint with a good smack of the wrist, or after unbolting the body side, twisting the shock counter-clockwise to loosen the threaded ball joint.

The body side IS my problem. It doesn't bolt off. My replacement shocks only have a hole where the cap goes but the originals have no way of removing the cap. I can unbolt the assembly but the shock won't come off the assembly.
