HELP!!! Electrical Problem - I Arced from my Alternator Now nothing works

Here's the problem, I was putting the car back together and I didn't disconnect the negative battery terminal. When I was bolting the lead on the alternator down, the wrench grounded on the UIM. Now nothing on the inside works. No lights, no stereo and no PFC. I checked all the fuses in the fuse block below the dash and they're all fine. Headlights work but no interior lights. The fuel pump won't work either when it's jumpered. The starter works and the car tries to turn over but won't because of no fuel. I thought I might have fried the ECU but I put the old ECU back in there and I've still got the same problem.

Is there some relay that I could have burnt out and how do I check them? I've checked all the fuses under the hood too.

Please someone help me, I'm supposed to get the car tuned on Saturday.

Thanks,
Jeremy

you fried something.... I would double and triple check all your fuses, with a multimeter, to make sure your getting continuity. Thats what theyr for, to protect componets if something like this happens. If it somehow got past the fuse block, I would start shooting wires. If you fried some wires going to your ECU, then the old ECU that you put in would act the same as a fried ECU+fried wires. That sucks man, hope you got an FSM and a good multimeter.

Yeah that's what it was. I know I checked that fuse several times but it looked fine. I checked it again this morning and it was definitely blown. Maybe I just couldn't see it being bleary eyed at 2 in the morning.

Thanks guys,
Jeremy

Yeah I already pulled it. Now I've gotta find a replacement.

They used it on different models? I hope so because no dealerships around here carry anything for the RX-7 anymore.

Not that I'm aware of... Most people just give Ray a call and order one.

Call Ray, his shipping is quick, especially if you let him know that it's a need to have part.

I've gotta have it today.

You're right though, Ray is really quick, it usually takes stuff 2 days from the minute I order it. However, 2 days is too far away.

Sorry, but doubtful that's going to happen. You can try NAPA but very few places carry anything of that size.

Good luck on getting the part, but I agree with Mahjik. You can try the local Mazda dealers, you'd be surprised what they have in stock sometimes.

Glad you learned your lesson shorting out the car instead of shorting out YOU....ALWAYS disconnect the battery!

Yeah I know, it was a bonehead move. I always disconnect the battery but I had been pressurizing the fuel lines to check for leaks and forgot to disconnect it when I was done. I know I know there's no excuse but sometimes you do stupid things.

The local dealership said that they have one. I'm going to see if that's the right one. If all else fails, I'll just borrow one from a buddy here in town Iceman (something). His car isn't running so I'll order one from Ray and use his in the meantime.

Thanks for all the help guys, this is the most valuable RX7 resource around.

Try NAPA as well if you need one. They've had the fuses for me (in stock!) before.

Ray will do overnight, though it'll be extra, and if he can get it in by 5, it'll probably get to you by at the most 10 tomorrow morning.
