Help: Cleaning Gas door spring

Behind your gas door, you see a small black spike that is supposed to move in an out based on the lever located to "pop" the gas tank. Mine is very dirty, and often gets stuck for hours/days without popping back out. Very frustrating. Is there an easy way to clean this, or any tips on how to take it apart? It must be reachable from in the trunk somewhere??

I have the Perfect solution for you. What you need to start doing if you wanna fix the problem but dont wanna spend any money, is when ever you put gas in your car and you push the fuel door lever down from the inside of the car, do NOT push the lever all the way down.

Push down very slowly until you hear the fuel door pop open, and the pin will never get stuck again. Even if it does get stuck, it will be sticking out enough for you to grab it with you hand and pull it back out.

I suppose that will work, but there has to be away to clean that thing without buying a whole new one. I am just curious if anyone has done such. The car is livable with it in the current state, but I would rather it fixed. Anyone?

Copious amounts/liberal spraying of PB Blaster will help.

The only 2 ways to fix this permanently in my opinion, are (1--- to replace the entire fuel door cable/pin assembly with a brand new OEM one which actually isnt too expensive I checked, its like $50-60, OR (2--- you can start opening the fuel door differently and pay $0 and never have the problem again. The problem with replacing the entire cable assembly, is that you gotta rip apart half the interior to do it and risk breaking old interior panels.
