I was just reading this post for the first time, not realizing it was an old post. I was going to suggest exactly what you found. Metallic racing clutches often die in this manner (or the friction material actually melts away to the point where it won't engage at all) due to the heat generated from excessive slipping. The problem is made worse by the fact that you get almost no warning - there is no smoke like you get with organic clutch materials which burn instead of melt.

On my Formula Continental, with metallic friction material, I have to be EXTREMELY careful about excessive slipping for this reason.
