Help & advice! oil consumption (yes, I searched 1st)
'93 w/ 100K, never been rebuilt. New (2K miles) OMP & turbo, performed by a very reputable shop. I have no fluid leaks.
I get the normal 10 - 30 second burn in the morning. Occasionally it can last 5 minutes, with a considerably greater amount of blue/white smoke. The exhaust contains black flecks. No pattern (that I can find) as to when the extended burns occcur.
Also, my oil consumption seems normal on typical day-to-day driving, but I can burn a quart w/ an 1hr of enthusiastic driving in the hills / country raods. The mechanic, very blandly, stated that I have a tired motor & can expect to spend ~$5K to rebuild the engine.
Thanks

Get a compression check and second opinion...if you don't need a new motor get a new mechanic. I hate mechanics that shaft you...it's like a doctor telling a patient with a bloody nose they have to saw off his leg

I 2nd that
Dealers will also tell you that your engine is history because "they CAN"T fix it"!
Look for oil leaks on the ground. Check oil pan first. Going by Pettits Protek-R scale you can burn 4oz with every tank of gas (I/3 quart seems to be my average).
Start replacing the weakest links:
Radiator (Fluidyne fits perfect)
Intercooler (Blitz has small SMIC)
AST (Pettit)
Vacuum Hoses (Hose Techniqes + Vitek Sleeving)
When you have the cash:
Bushings/Spearical Bearings
Suspension
ECU (Apex'i is sweet)
