Heater Issue + Mazda Fan Control Drain
So...over the past 5yrs of RX7 ownership I've gone from a guy who didn't know how to change his own oil to stripping cars and pulling engines. I finally picked up an FD about 4 months ago and have really enjoyed playing with it (especially since I also had a full parts car I disassembled first).
A few weeks ago, the lights on my AC Console stopped working and it would not blow outside of speed 1. Actually, that is incorrect. Only the lights on the AC button itself and the air recirc button did not work. I don't do electrical so a mechanic buddy of mine went through the wiring diagrams, double checked all the fuses and eventually jumpered a relay beneath the blower...all fan speeds work now.
So...air blows and works on all speeds (even with a PFC...imagine that!). What it does not do is I can not get any hot air to blow (in a RX7 of all things) and when I use the (vent control ****? Whatever the second big **** is that chooses how air blows) air direction only blows straight out. Will not go to defrost of legs and sure as heck doesn't blow hot. The AC Light and Recirc Light still do not activate when presfactory sed.
Also..when I have the factory update black AC control module it seems to drain my battery when the car is off. Short somewhere perhaps?
I'm going back for round two with my mechanic buddy in a few days and I've done some searching but experienced input always helps.
Thanks!

What Ive learned from similar issues:
The first thing is that the heat will only work HOT in the defrost and leg blower positions. The other vents will only blow cool-warm air, engineers thought that blasting the driver with hot air would cause them to fall asleep. Not sure if any of that changed with your updated ac module.
second, if your blower position is not working, the biggest culprit is a faulty mode door actuator. ITs a small motor (near the steering column, behind the stereo area on a lhd model) that controls the mode door which directs the air flow to different directions. Sometimes you can take it off and apart and clean it to get it working. You can also manually move the arm attached to this motor to get the airflow to change as a temp fix. The motors can be ordered through Ray at Malloy Mazda.
Hope this helps, and anyone who knows more, correct me if I am wrong.

Thank you for the information. I was unaware of the heater limitations. The good news is that I have a parts car that I've got backup parts from for this type of thing.
I also wonder...I was running wiring from the passenger side to the driver side and maybe I dislodged something. Dash is coming out in a few weeks regardless so perhaps I will discovered the culprit!

Pull the second **** (the one that chooses where air blows) off by pulling it directly straight out. Once it is off you will find a hole. Align the hole with the peg that is behind it, and then tighten in with the lock nut. This may not make sense right now, but will once you pull off the ****.
This may fix your problem.
