Unhappy heat shield squeak!!

The heat shield above my main cat sometimes gives out a high-pitched squeak when the car goes over bumps....

I can repeat this by swinging the exhaust system back and forth slightly, or by grabbing an edge of the heat shield under the car and bending/flexing it around.

talk about annoying...my car sounds cheap when i'm going over speed bumps. Any ideas on how to fix this? I've tried bending the shielding back a little from the main cat, but that hasn't worked.

anyway, until i get it up on 4 jacks and really get a good look at it...just wanted to see if anyone else had run into a similar problem. Maybe I can stuff some exhaust wrap in there or something.

thanks!

I have the same problem, I already removed teh lower shield. U can try taking some big pliars and just ripping the damn thing off. Im just going to remove mine once I get a midpipe or high flow.

I wouldn't remove the heat shield unless you like a butt warmer and don't mind getting roasted. Also you might cook any hidden wiring/plumbing.

Have you tried tightening the heat shield?

I can try tightening it when i get a chance to get it off the ground.

Rx-7$4$me, i don't know if a midpipe will be a fix, because my friend just discovered he had a similar squeak, and he's got a midpipe installed.

anyway, i'll post back up here if I fix it.

thanks for the input guys

this happens when it breaks at the edges....i actually tried welding it but it would not hold. I simply wired it very tight and it seemed to hold....i also bent the parts that were rubbing away from each other. no more squeaks.

but now i run a midpipe.

You can have an exhaust shop spot weld it back together but I guess that may not always work, from Artguy's post.

I've never heard of or tried this, but what about wrapping it really tight with header wrap? It would seem to me that it would keep the temps down in the interior as well as muffle, or eliminate the squeaks.
