I haven't removed the old rack yet as I know it will throw the alignment out of kilter.

If I put the new one on, how do I fix the front wheels in place so that my toe are not screwed up with the new rack?

 

before you start to work on the car, center the steering wheel straight with the wheels straight. and when you put the rack on make sure its centered and that the steering wheel is still straight, do not turn the steering wheel when the rack is not installed. You may damage the clock spring inside inside the steering wheel which may cause you air bag not to work. You have to get an allignment, no way around it. If after the rack is replaced and you steering wheel is upside down, you did something wrong. If you did it right it should not be more than 45 degrees off. The tie rods should be in the same place as before, you may want to count the thread showing on the inner tie rods, or measure it.

 

Thanks. Of course I would get an alignment considering that I'm doing the Labreck bushing at the same time. I was thinking of something ingenous to allow me to get to the alignment shop without veering off the road.

For example, I was thinking of making a 2 by 4 board to lock the front wheel in place with the steering wheel centered.
