Question Has anyone replaced 5th gear themselves

Looking into buy a 93 with a bad 5th gear syncro. I am pretty mechanicly inclined ( I can drop a tranny and have fixed a second gear syncro on an s10 once) Just want to know if I am going to get in way over my head.

I rebuilt my whole trans myself, but i am a mechanic. Honestly though, the RX-7 transmission is very similar to an american RWD trannt. If you could handle that s-10, which I'm assuming was a 700-R4 tranny, then you should be fine.

I replaced the 5th gear syncro in my car last summer. Really easy. Fifth gear and reverse are in the middle housing and you do not have to disassemble the whole tranny to get to them. While your in there though, check the syncro to gear clearance for all the gears. The 1st gear syncro on my car was close to the low limit. Many people have problems shifting from second down to first, and I believe this may be the problmem. You'll be mad if you don't look at it and then have problems in the near future.

Although I have never worked on an S10 T5, it shouldn't be any harder.
