Has anybody's odometer ever burnt up? Pics...

When I originally got my RX-7 back after getting hit by the drunk driver, I noticed a little patch of what I though was condensation in the center of my odometer. Ever since then my odometer would occasionally turn blank but still remain backlit. As time went on, the periods in which the odo would blank out increased. Eventually, the odo turned off for good. Now that my life is back on track, I'm fixing up the car. I have the cluster out and I noticed that the patch looked more like a scorch mark up close and it has grown to cover nearly the whole odo. I took some pictures, but it's hard to to see any detail in them. Has this ever happened to anyone? What do you think could have caused this? What are my options for repairing this?

Thanks in advance!

Wow, that is weird. It kind of looks like there was definitely some heat involved with the problem, judging by the last photo and your description of how it got worse as time passed. No idea what could've caused it, though; it's just a digital display, so I can't see how there would be so much heat buildup. Maybe condensation buildup inside that area? Just a guess...
