If you are going to be running a harness you should be running some sort of roll bar for protection. If you are in an accident that would actually require the services of a 4/5pt harness the cockpit could be in danger of compression. If this happens and you are in a harness that does not allow you to submarine away from the roof your spine will be compressed causing possible irrecoverable damage, paralysis, or death.
Kirk Racing makes the best roll bar/harness bar combination for the money that is SCCA legal. And it is only $400. Close to the same price as most harness bars. The install is a PITA, but overall quality of the bar is good. Most any name brand harnesses (sparco, schroth, Takata, etc.) will say and also list if it is SCCA legal.
