GPS/Bluetooth Phone/Backup Cam Mirror
GPS/Bluetooth Phone/Backup Cam Mirror
Anybody tried these technologies in your FD. Seems a good idea because it does not take more window space - which is already at a premium IMO.
There are many modern in-dash GPS systems that can do these things. They will wire up the same as any vehicle. Camera mounting will just take some innovation on your part.
I will be running a double-DIN GPS when I finally get to the interior...

I have all that. Backup camera is easy. Mounts to the license plate holes and switches on automatically when the car is in reverse. Video from the camera plays through the double din GPS head unit which happens to have Bluetooth.

My FD's stock cassette stereo was swapped out by the previous owner many moons ago. When I obtained it, I went ahead and had it swapped again due to the original deck's skipping CD. Found out whoever did the wiring left everything exposed back there.
Thankfully a pro audio shop did an install of my Sony CD player deck properly. Everyhting is nice and tidy again.
Alas, we're now in 2013. Driving and talking with a cellphone is illegal. Who even loads music onto CD's nowadays???
My Miata was setup essentially the same as my FD. CD player, plain jane mirror. So I started experimenting with it. And you'll find more than a few similarities between the models.
I purchased the OEM Autodim/Homelink mirror found on the later NC2 Miata's and installed it on my NC1 Miata. That was essentially plug and play.
The FD has the same basic layout. Only difficult part is trying to run the wire into the headliner without wrecking it. That's the tricky part.
Next, I went ahead and did the inevitable 2DIN replacement deck for the Miata. I never wanted a navi system. I spec'ed out a reasonable bluetooth system from Clarion.
To my surprise, the company I ordered it from sent me the wrong unit. They sent me the newest navi system at the time. So away I went installing it into the Miata.
I was so impressed with the system, I've been keeping an eye out for the later models so I can equip the FD with it. It will fit perfectory with the FD and I can't wait to do it.
I don't see why you would want a backup rear camera. Our cars are small and very easy to see out of.
Rear view cameras are mandatory nowdays since cars are designed for aerodynamics and "safety" (people who don't know how to drive). So alot of cars have a really high rear end. thick A Pillars, and meaty doors, not letting you see a damn thing out the back.
I would stick with the stock OEM Autodim/Homelink mirror offered at Mazda (or if you can find it cheaper somewhere else, by all means) and a 2DIN aftermarket Navi unit.
I didn't think I needed a touch screen navi unit, but I was really impressed with the unit they incorrectly sent me. Now it's all I look at if I want to replace the aging head unit in the FD.

So do I, but I want to have the best technology in each.
I like the Double Dins, But unless and until I have to change it out, I'd rather keep the stock radio as long as possible. Most AF units look after-market.
That is the type to which I am referring.

...anywho; while driving I took a good look at the head unit. I still like it's looks and the sound is great, but I did notice the cassette and CD player, both of which I would never again use.
If I could replace just those two units I think I would.
