Governor

Is the '94 RX-7 equipped with a governor? I have heard both ways on this. If there is one, I have heard it limits around 160mph. If there is one, how would I go about disabling it, and where is this listed in the factory service manual?

Thanks!

No governor. Top speed is drag limited, i.e. with more power you can attain a higher top speed.

With enough power, the gear limited top speed is somewhere in the 205 mph range

I believe some euro version did have a speed limiter. No US versions have them.

Really? Thats odd. Usually it's the other way around. Usually we get crappy governors and everyone else gets unlimited speed. Case in point, every BMW.

As far as I know, only the Japanese models have the speed limiter. I think it's at 180 km/hr. There have been several posts from Britan from owners who got Japanese cars and wanted to shut off the limiter. So far no one has posted they have sucessfully done this. Note that these cars will have the 16 bit ECU (post 96 models), so a different Power FC would be required that what we use in North America, if you're thinking that may be a good fix.

Various magazines tests put them at somewhere between 159 and 165 in stock trim, with anywhere from 5.1 to 5.5 0 - 60 times. I've heard of sub-5 second times but those must be a.) nice cold days and b.) professional drag racers....lol
Many Forum members report over 165 mph speeds, and a few mods put those speeds into the stratospheric 180 mph range.
My personal best in an indicated 158, it took a while to get there, but then again I am running an automatic tranny too.
Most European cars are limited in some form or another to 155 mph. Perhaps that is where the 'governor' rumor came into play(?)
