got my first FD, have questions about it

hey people. i'm new here and i just bought my first FD, a black r1 (completly stock). i dont really know a whole lot FDs yet, but i did quite a bit of research on the net about them before i bought mine and i'm wondering if you guys could recommend any good intercoolers or radiators for me to get. i'm not looking for the cheapest or the best of the best, but for something thats really reliable and whatevers the best bang for the buck.

also, besides upgrading the intercooler and radiator is there anything else i should do to help the reliablity of the car? well besides the hoses (which i've read on a few sites that you should change them to silicon ones and clamp them?)

anyways, thanks for your time

I think the best bang for the buck as far as reliability is concerned is the Downpipe. This gets the precat out which helps reduce engine bay temps. this helps everything in the enginebay. If high boost is a concern with this mod the pills can be changed to manage boost with a stock computer.

Radiator - Fluidyne, cause you can install it yourself witout a problem. Also, along the same lines of being worried about temperature, do a search on "evans coolant" or something similar. It's a non-water-based propylene glycol coolant that will basically never boil (which is good) www.evanscooling.com

On the subject of intercooler, contrary to popular belief, a performance intercooler is not a reliability mod, in fact it would be quite the opposite for your near-stock FD. With a better performing intercooler, your boost would go up, which is a big no-no with out an aftermarket ECU. Now, don't get me wrong, you CAN do it, many many FDs have been known to run with dp, cb, intake, and ic, with no problems. But, IMO, that's gettin' a little close to the edge.

As said up a couple posts, get a downpipe, it lowers underhood temps, gives you a little performance boost, and saves you from replacing your main cat if the pre-cat ever were to go bad.

Your first mods should be a down pipe and boost gauge.

BTW, Congrats! What did you pay for it?

Definitely get a downpipe.
You should get the radiator (however not as definite as downpipe).

No intercooler for now.

Downpipe brands don't matter much, it's just a pipe. SS is nice though. Look at www.rx7store.net it has lots.

Look into replacing/eliminating your AST as well.

Any downpipe would work. the M2 one is supposed to be the easiest to install. YOu can find people selling used DPs left and right. go to www.rx7store.net for lots of dps etc.

Good luck on the car! Go to the archieve and other places and read read read.

Black Side 93 RX7

Wow
Sounds like the same steps I went though when I got my stock Black 93.

I did an M2 Stage 3 upgrade.
The only thing I would have done different is a Apex CPU that just plugs in factory harness.
Only problem in tuning it correctly was my fear. I was afraid if I tuned it wrong I would have blown an engine with only 10K on it. So I went with M2 reprogamming my CPU. So far I have not blown anything and most of my hard driving is from 0-70 MPH against Vetts and Mustangs.

What a rush!!! Then they blow by me when I let off gas.

Good luck with your upgrades!! Seems like enough is never enough. I just keep pouring in the money to my RX-7's

Dude, quit post whoring so blatantly. The mods'll get ya for it if you aren't careful.

*ahem* mods? you slackin' or what??

Btw, FD is short for FD3S, which is the third gen RX-7. 1st gens are FB3S, and seconds are FC3S.

It makes it easier, cause when you reference "RX-7" no one knows which one you're talking about, so use FB, FC, FD.
