Got an ECL code 16: EGR Valve

I guess my engine light comes on because of my EGR valve. I read up on the EGR valve on robroninette.com. It Said you can just easily disable it. My question is, is it hurting my engine at all if don't disable it or replace it. It's purpose is to let in a bit of exhaust gas which cools so that nitogen oxide doesn't form. And from the codes I got, it read next to it "California Only", which worries me since I'm originally from California and plan on bringing my FD there when I finally go back.

Odd, I was just posting asking if CEL meant "Check Engine Light" and you wrote it as ECL...:P

I have the same problem. The previous owner of my car told me that in 93 EGR existed but with no sensor/code, 94 had EGR and a code, and 95's have no EGR...

I also assumed it recirculates the exhaust gas during warmup to quicken warm-up time and reduce emissions.

For most FD's, is it because the sensor itself is a bit faulty, or is it an actual problem with the EGR? It didn't seem like anything hard to fix, but I've read of replaced EGR's doing the same thing after only 3K miles. I would like to get rid of that check engine light at times though

Wrote it up a little fast sorry. Anyway, so I guess it's not hurting much, but what's up with it saying "California Only" on the list for this specific code? Like I said before, when I go back to California, I plan on bringing my FD. With my light coming on, does it mean it would pose a problem on California emissions?

the valve is ok, its the sensor on the top thats the problem. you can add a relay to shut the CEL off. or you can buy a new EGR for about $300.00 plus $200.00 labor to install. just had mine fixed yesterday and on the way home CEL again code 16. you just can't win. don't you just love California Smog Laws.
