I have the dash out now to replace my carpet, what can I do while I have it out? Also I have removed the A/C and I have this stil in the dash, can I remove this core, these hoses, and this plug looking thingy? Pics below.

Yes, I want to keep the heat. I will leave the housing box in, but just take the core out.

How exactly do you propose to keep the heat, and remove the heater core at the same time?

That's not the heater core. It's the A/C!
And yes you can remove everything, you will need to keep the box or rig something up so you can use the blower motor with the heater matrix.

i would leave it incase the next person that ownes your car wants a/c. there is no benefit to removing it.

As the others have said all you will need to do is complete the passageway for the air from the blower TO the heater core. Replacing the box will most likely do that with some plugs for the little holes that need to be filled.

As to NO advantage. well that depends on how **** you are about weight, when you are trying to get that down. Every pound/Gram helps.

And shame on you for ever thinking about selling the car again allrotor93

Yeah, I just wanted to do it for weight, and I will not be selling the car.

YES! Order this duct to replace it with from Mazda:

FD01-61-150B - DUCT, AIR

It is the OEM part for cars w/o A/C. I ordered one and did it just recently. They cost about $30 from the dealership and fit perfectly. you might wanna order 2 or 4 of these too...these are the clips that hold it in place but its pretty tight w/o them anyways.

99264-0531 (x4)

It should save you about 8 lbs from the car.

Whoops! My bad! I didn't even look at the pictures. I just saw "core" in the title and assumed it was the heater. Thanks for correcting me.

BTW, that part is called the evaporator. If you're ripping it out, you should know the name of it .

The wiring most likely goes to the thermoswitch in the evaporator - it's there to switch the AC compressor off if the evaporator gets too cold and starts to freeze up. If you have no AC, it's not a concern - just remove it.

Getting the duct from Mazda is the clean way to do it, but you can also separate the two halves of the evaporator and pull the evaporator and expansion valve out, then put the plastic shell back together and seal it with RTV or caulk.

To take out that "box," all you have to do is remove the glove box. From there you can access it and remove it.
