Got a bit of an issue with my ONE key...

or what's left of it.

Broke my key in the ignition switch today. The key is way up in there. I can still stick the nub and start the car but I can't lock it.

So far this is what I'm planning to do. I called my local dealer and they can order me a new key for $7. Now I hope none of the locks has been changed before. Called a locksmith and got told that it might be doable but it will cost me any where from $150-$300. A new ignition switch with key is $270 at Mazdatrix. Can I get any suggestions of other options?

Funny thing is that I was on my way to get a new key made.

Take apart the passenger side door on the lock mechanism there is a code, call a lock smith and give them that 4 digit code with the year make and model of your car and they will cut you a perfect key.

That's what i did to get a new key, i did have to bring in proof that i owned the car however.

As for the key stuck in the ignition. Start taking it apart i'm sure you can get it out.

edit: When i got 2 keys made it cost me 45$ when you use the key code they charge you more then just tracing an old key.
