Get 540. I guess you talking about E39. I have this car for 4 years now. I never had car for so long and I'm not planning on getting rid of it. But I compliment it by having FD as a second car

Subaru Legacy GT gets my vote. They make great power also with just a few mods, Subaru's amazing AWD, mid size sedan, very powerful for what it has under the hood (runs 14.2 sec in the 1/4 stock), decent aftermarket support, sounds absolutely amazing with aftermarket exhaust and they look very sexy. I would pick this over the Mazdaspeed 6 and 540 any day.

What about an E36 M3? 4 doors, refined, and sporty? Plus they're only 50 pounds heavier the then coupe version!

^ Not exactly reliable unfortunately, especially since it's a 90's car with very expensive replacement parts. I was looking at them recently and most of them were in the 100k mile range.

That's true, however most bimmers aren't broken in till around the 200,000km range. Also you'll be spending a lot less for this then some of other other cars listed. Just matched all of his criteria, so keep it open as an option i guess.

I love my rotary's and V8's, but nothing, no other engine config. is as efficient as maing BIG power as a V8.
Go for the GTO, you wont regret it, if you go anything that needs a turbo, it'l cost you reliability and money.

Go GTO.

You folks can argue as much as you want, but after driving BMW - you won't go back. This is the car that built to be driven. This is also expierence all my friends have. I only know few people who switched back to Lexus/Acura because of reliability issues.

Subaru, for example. AWD, very nice engine.

I beleive it's also age preference. But I would never take STI as my daily driver

Wish I had the nerve to do what you did, I'm trying to work it up right now. My FD is hibernating right now while I'm on campus, its such a waste. I think after I take it to the strip next month I'm going to put her up for sale, I hate to....but I have to

Some good ideas for a replacement car in this thread....

Im just stating my opinion and just remember NOOB this is a RX7 site and 95% of the people here have ROTARIES and the other 5% have there own section on here to so there is no discrimination.

So your saying that cause its a V8 IT CANT BE BEAT, thats what i understand and guess what im going to raise BULL **** FLAG. A 1.3 liter (arguably 2.6) can have less the horsepower of a GTO and still beat it. But it dosnt matter what you have you can make anything fast even honda's no matter what size the engine.

I was talking about the Legacy GT which is a whole different car... That's somewhat biased...

I know that car. It's excellent car for money. Just not my cup of tea.
To really know what you want - you have to drive car every day for at least a month. Simple test drive wouldn't tell you.

Legacy GT is excellent on paper. Power, features, blah, blah. But do you like the feel of this car? Feedback from steering wheel? Brakes? Interior noise? How solid car on highway speeds? How nice interior panels to touch? How cheap plastic looks? Is there solid "thump" when you close a door? Are those nuts in engine compartment rusted in 1 year? Do you appreciate engineering solutions?

All those things very important. Some people don't care, they just need to get from A to B.

Maybe what hes trying to say is that its pretty hypocritical to say a blanket statement like v8's are dumb even on a rotary forum. Perhaps the v8 cars you've seen are dumb, but have you seen a twin turbo v8 Champ car, F1 car, or a Ferrari f50 in person? all use extrodinary v8's, but there are many other nice uses of v8's such as the GTO...

I have had a couple cobras which I thought were awesome dohc v8's, but the reason I was drawn to the 7 was chasis strength, weight, and weight distribution.

But im just a stupid NEWB so what do I know.

Wow, your car was actually my background image for a few months.

Here, I still have it (among like 3 others) saved.

It's funny how differently we tend to think...

When I first got my FD, I tried using it as a daily driver for 8 months, and quickly realized that wasn't a good idea. Selling it wasn't an option, however. I simply put it aside as my Sunday car/toy/whatever you wanna call it, and got a nice beater. Got an '86 Accord for $500. Drove it 'till it died. Did it's purpose. Then I got an FB. I've had her for quite a while now. Gas mileage is iffy, but MAN the car's fun. And I take her EVERYWHERE. No worries about dents, getting dinged, blah blah, and def. nowhere nearly enough electronics to go bad on you LOL (*Ahem*Beemer*Ahem).

What I'm trying to understand is...if you guys love your FDs so much, why don't you just keep the FD and get a cheap beater? Why do ya gotta sell the FD and spend a ton of money buying something you're gonna BEAT ON?

~Ramy

PS: Everyone keeps asking about the car's paint job; that FD is BlueRex's old FD, and he had it painted SLK Blue IIRC

I agree with Ramy!

If you love your FD, keep it, buy a shitty ***, old piece of **** that you could beat the **** out of.. I sold my Acura recently and picked up an 8. I kind of miss my Acura as I didn't give a **** what happened to it.. Parked at a shitty location (next to HUGE SUV's) and it was total worry free. Now, I worry about the damn 8.. But not as much as the FDs. I'll probably never sell my MB or BLK FD. Ok.. Maybe the MB.. LOL!

some people get a fd for the wrong reasons. its too much effort for most owners.. the cars are definitely better off with enthusiastic owners that will appreciate having them

I drive an E39 now, it's an awesome car but personally, I think the general BMW community sucks donkey *****. If they're not making fun of every other car brand they're mouthing off on how much better their BMW is than your BMW.

I would have kept the FD and bought a beater, especially since you're looking at a GTO now which isn't exactly "practical" either. Good luck to you.
