Gentex Auto Dimming Mirror Installed!
Finally got around to install an auto dimming mirror.
I purchased it from Ebay (I think 69 shipped). Got it quickly also included the wire hiding plastic piece, a standard wedge mount, harness and adhesive and a wire tap.
1. Remove the old mirror, it is held by a Philip head screw (watch out it strips easy).
2. Remove the metal mount cover which is head on by two more screws to finally get access to the mirror mount.
3. The new mirror uses a standard wedge mount, so you will remove the old mount and glue in the new wedge mount.
Or make an intermediate bracket because you tried to remove the mirror mount but the body shop who attached it used some super strong adhesive, making it physically impossible for yourself to remove it.
Or you can just mount the wedge a bit higher using the adhesive. But it looks a bit tacky from the outside.
I chose the second solution, by making a bracket. My intermediate bracket was made out of scrap aluminum and the wedge was attached to it using two screws, not the most elegant solution, but it's on there good, no vibrations either. I will make a better mount later.
Finally there are two wires you have to run, one is ground and another is ignition powered. I used the radio power wire since I know it turns on when the ignition is switched on.
Here is a front shot.
Pro's:
No longer have to flip the mirror to avoid blinding lights from trucks, suv, poorly aimed hids.
Clears the sun visors perfectly.
Looks more modern
Has two adjust-ability versus the stock's one
Con's:
Minor Weight increase.
Minor battery usage when turned on.
