gated shifter?

Do you think it would be stupid to try and make a pseudo gated shifter for the FD? I think it would be pretty simple to make, but it probably wouldn't be very strong. I dunno, what do you guys think?

I toyed with the idea for some time about a year ago, but never followed up on it simply because they're not easy to use compared to what the stock shifter is like. A good buddy of mine works at a Ferrari dealership in the Washington DC area and he's had plenty of opportunities to drive them and he's not a big fan of them. They sure look sweet, but he says you have to be very accurate to get them in and you can't shift very fast. I was gonna use carbon fibre for mine, but polished or chromed metal would look better I think. Just my 2¢

I had a gated shifter on my Pantera. I always thought it was like riding a bike with training wheels.

The real drawback is that there are times when the shift stalk collides (sometimes forcefully) with the teeth of the gate. The shift stalk winds up getting grooves in the side of it, and the gate can slow down your shifting.

I noticed that many, if not most, Pantera owners saw off the teeth of the gate leaving just an opened chrome rectangle. That told me the shift gate was not an advantage, and many felt it to be a pain.

well, I just seem to have a lot of problems shifting into third quickly. It always seems to catch the inbetween first and third, and grinds. Maybe something is wrong with my tranny, and the gate would fix the symptom, not the disease.

What is a gated shifter? I know what they look like and have seen them on cars but is there something special about them other than the cosmetic appeal?

Wow. 10 year bump. I think that's a record!

IMHO, gated shifters are purely for aesthetic value.
