Funny story--kind of military related
Ever since Sept. 11 at Fort Hood there are gate guards checking military IDs. It's created a bit of a problem as far as traffic and getting to work on time. At the main gate, there are three lanes with around 4 or 5 soldiers per lane checking IDs. The traffic is always slow, and there are 50 to 100 cars waiting in line at any given time. I usually come in through a smaller, single lane side gate but came in through the main gate today.
So as I'm in the middle lane rolling past the soldiers to the front of the line to get my ID checked, I hear:
"Whoa! Is that a Viper?"
"That's an [insert tone of awe] *Rx7*!"
"Holy ****!"
Then the SGT checking my ID says, "Nice car Sir...does this thing have Nitrous?"
And I reply (w/a shiteating grin) "Nope, just 2 turbos "
to which he replies, "That's good enough for me!"
It was funny as hell....all the soldiers were drooling; they actually stopped working to stare. I barely drive the 7 to work b/c I've been taking my CRX, but I felt like a celebrity today

That is a funny story! I used to live in Belton (real close to Ft. Hood), so it is nice to see that some of the military personnel there know what an RX-7 is. They were all about Camaros and Trans Ams when I lived there.

I've got my own "definitely military related" funny story.
Driving my Z06 back from Alabama ($4,500 cheaper than Washington state, and I was under the impression that I could get it delivered, but geography and 9/11 killed that plan...) we were blazing along I-95 but eventually hit a checkpoint before the Hoover dam in Nevada.
They were detouring semis away from the dam (this was November, and apparently they still are) and were checking all smaller vehicles before allowing them to cross the dam. Three soldiers armed with M-16s on foot and one in the back of a Humvee on a .50 cal under a desert camo mesh canopy.
The Q&A guy walks up to the door of the Corvette and asks where I've been, where I'm going, and when I told him that my dad and I were driving my new Vette home, he complimented me on the car, asked me how much horsepower, and so on, and by this time all three foot soldiers and were checking it out. The other cars being stopped were being detained longer but he said something like "Well, you don't have a trunk big enough to hold anything dangerous, have fun on your trip back, Sir." and let me slide right through. The guy in the back of the Humvee gave me a thumbs up as I went past.

What is the acronym for "humvee," and what does it stand for?
I know the answer, do you

HMMV and HMMWV are interchangeable. Both refer to the same vehicle.

Sorry, by "pulled something like this" I meant "in the event that you said it was the opposite of whatever I posted." I should have just posted both acronyms after I thought about it.
Ghostrider? Is that you Goose?

This story kind of reminds me what happens on a daily basis to me and a bunch of the other 7 owners in Okinawa.
The Marines over here are not allowed to drive cars unless they are NCO's or above(for them corporal). They're always sticking the Lance Corporal's and below on guard duty...makes sense...they haven't paid their dues yet.
Well, after 9/11 they have been doing "Random" vehicle searches at different gates on different bases. Whenever they have a "Random" vehicle search, it never fails...I ALWAYS GET PICKED. I'll see them wave in like 10 cars, and then they'll flag me in. They'll have me stop the car, open up all the compartments including and especially the engine bay. I always get the say questions...
"How much this cost you Sergeant?"
"Do you race it?"
"Have you been caught speeding?"
and..."How did you get a Viper over here?"
I'll watch about another 10 cars go through...all heads turned to the REALLY bright FD with the short guy answering questions to a bunch of 18 yr old PFC's...
...Kinda makes me feel all warm inside
