Fuel vapor separator

Hey guys,

There is a black plastic thing above and behind the fuel tank. According to the workshop manual, it is the the "separator". There are two nipples in the top of the fuel tank. The hoses that plug into those nipples eventually run to the "separator", then from there one hose runs to the charcoal canister. So, I assume that the point has something to do with capturing vapors and running them through the charcoal canister, however, I don't know if the point for the seperator is simply to act as a 'y', if there is some kind of valve in it, or something else.

Any help? In then end, I'm wondering if I can just eliminate it, or if I need it there.
