do you have to remove the fuel tank or can you get it out by the trunk?

The fuel pump can be changed in about 30 minutes from the trunk.

Lift up the carpet. Unscrew the access hatch. Disconnect the harness and unhook the hoses (after releasing the pressure), and unscrew the top of the tank.

Lift up carefully, watch the fuel level sender.

p.s. Computational models have demonstrated that it is easier with less gas in the tank

You can get it out from the hatch. Fuel tank removal is not recommended. Takes maybe 30 mins. Lift up carpet and it is on the drivers side.
